letting go

goodbye, mystery bird,
who came unexpectedly
to my doorstep.
i liked having you around -
you didn't beg for attention like a dog
you didn't boss me around like a cat
sometimes you'd walk around on my shoulder
sometimes when i'd reach my hand over to you,
you'd try to peck it off.
but i didn't mind,
i figured you were in the mood to be alone.

that time when you sat on my head,
and i went to take photos in the mirror,
sorry to make you think you found
your long lost twin.
that looked like it hurt.

i wasn't careful enough, when i took you
out to walk, sitting on my shoulder.
i thought you would stay
i thought we were meant for each other
by how you found me.
but just as suddenly as you came,
you left.

i tried to get you out of that tree,
but you flew higher and higher,
you stubborn bird.

my mom held up a picture of you
on her i-phone
telling you what a nice bird
is waiting for you on the ground.
but i knew you wouldn't fall for that again.

i hope it's nice
wherever you are now.
